I've been watching Logan really closely these past two or three weeks and noticed that he's been going to the bathroom every 20-30 minutes. It got me concerned. I remembered my mother telling me that having to urinate frequently was a sign of Diabetes. So I went online to get the other symptoms. He was drinking water like crazy and hungry all the time. The night before Thanksgiving he wet the bed. He NEVER wets the bed. It was also on the list of symptoms. We called my sister-in-law, Magen--who is diabetic, and asked her to bring over her blood meter. When we tested him it read HI (which means any number over 500). A normal person should be around 80-140. We knew then something was wrong. Friday I took him into the dr. to confirm it. Sure enough he has Type 1 diabetes. Luckily the dr says we caught it one week before he would have been so sick he would have needed to be hospitalized. I thank my Heavenly Father for that--for letting me see the signs and feeling the urgency of his condition.
So now we are on a very hard journey. We have to check his blood by pricking his finger 5-10 times a day and give him insulin shots 4-7 times a day. It's a lot of poking and it truly breaks my heart each time we have to do it. Logan's been so good natured about it all. He's never cried or fought us. The hard part is that he gets confused and asks, "Why do you have to do that?" "Is my sickness gone yet?" even though we've explained it to him over and over. He is such a brave little boy. Every nurse that even meets him is amazed at how sweet he is. The two times that they had to draw blood from him (4 viles of blood) he watched them do it, didn't cry or fight at all. He got a teddy bear and a huge handful of stickers. They said they've never seen a child be so calm. He truly is my sweetheart.
We are now looking at different pumps instead of giving him shots all day. Hopefully we can find one we like and get it soon so we aren't poking him all the time.
I'm still struggling everyday with the emotions of finding out your child is sick. I heard someone say it's the "grieving of your child's perfect health." It's true. He's going to be just fine. He will live to be as old as anyone else. He's just going to have a lot more to do to stay healthy. You just never think it will happen to your child.
These pictures were taken a week before we found out. My sweet, brave little boy!

Huge hugs Kandis! So sorry you are having to go through this - but I"m so glad you found it out! Your so smart and yes, touched by Heavenly Father! For my old job, I worked each year with the Juvinile Diabetes Foundation to raise money for kids with Diabetes. It seems like it always come to the brave ones - the strong ones that can fight it and stand up to it. My good friends son has it and he is doing great - in 2 grade now and they've got it all down. It will come - be patient with it all! Your in my thoughts and prayers - and your sweet boy too! What a superstar! Hugs girl!
I'm so sorry! I've always worried and wondered what I would do if one of my children had serious health problems-I'm sure it would most definitely be hard. You're in my prayers!
Kandis,
Thank you for sharing that with us! I'm so sorry that Logan has to go through that! He sounds truly amazing and this story is such a testament of God's work in us everyday. Hugs to all of you!
Hi Kandis,
I'm sending you a big hug from California! I'm sad to hear about Logan's diagnosis, but very proud of you for being so vigilant. Logan is blessed to have you as his mom.
The grieving process for lost health is an ongoing one. Strangely I have found that the Lord allows his strongest soldiers to face some of the toughest storms. What a miracle that you were prompted to study up on and do some testing on your own for the diabetes. My thoughts, prayers, and thoughts are with you, Kandis!!
Kandis, I'm so sorry to hear that your sweet boy and your family are faced with this illness. But, thank God He led you to know the signs. Sending prayers.
i'm sending ALL of my love to you and logan - he will keep being the wonderful kid we all love, and i'm glad to hear he didn't have to get really sick before you caught it - that is a HUGE blessing. keep giving him hugs and lollipops!

Such a hard journey to go through Kandis. Sounds like he has been a real trooper though. You'll be in my prayers as you struggle to find the best way to monitor him as he embarks on this journey.
HUGS!
Kandis, I am so sorry. 4 out of my 11 have diabetes. 3 were diagnosed before the age of 2 and one was diagnosed at age 7 last March. If you ever need to talk my contact info is over on the Core board. Praying for you guys as you adjust.
Praise God that you were lead to find out the answer. My favorite words of this post are, "He is going to be fine". I am not sure of your belief on healing but let me encourage you in this... The Word says in 1 Peter 2:24 "Who his own self (Jesus) bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye WERE healed." Those last words are important, Jesus went to the cross to bare all of our sins and sickness. He already conquered Diabetes in Logan on the cross, you just need to speak it out. Every time you give him a shot or check his blood confess, I thank you Lord that Logan is healed of Diabetes in Jesus Name and just watch the Lord work in his little body. I know that is going out on a limb especially on a blog that many others read. I had a friend who did this very thing with her diabetes...and it's GONE. She has never seen it return for years now. I pray this encourages and not offends because that is my intention...you already believe he will be fine and I agree with you that he will. You have a precious family Kandis! Blessings to you.
I'm sorry - that must be so hard to find out and to have to give him shots all the time. Thank goodness you saw the signs!
It's really true that we aren't given anything more than we can handle. Hang in there! And congrats on baby #3!
Blog hopping..
was deeply touched reading your story about your son/diabetes.
You both are in my thoughts and prayers.
Oh Kandis, my heart goes out to you!! The exact same thing happened to my DH around Thanksgiving as well! Unfortunately, unlike you, we did not know the symptoms and I barely got my DH to the ER in time. Docs said he would have been in a diabetic coma if it was any later. So glad to hear your son is holding up to it well! He is brave indeed! He's such a handsome little man! Sending you well wishes.
I just happened upon your site from echo park. Just wanted to let you know that my 7 year old son was diagnosed with type 1 in July. I know how you feel, Owen is truly amazing and I feel I get my strengh to go on from him. Hugs.
